Southeast Regional Director
About
John Maury began his career in financial services in 2008 as a Retirement Plan Sales Associate for John Hancock. In 2012, he joined a CPA firm where he advised small business owners on taxes, accounting, and retirement plans. He later returned to John Hancock as a TPA Regional Marketing Director. In his new role, he focused on partnering with TPAs across multiple regions to increase retirement plan sales, retention, and profitability. He also created and launched the Plan Tune-Up Program for TPAs across the country. In 2020, John joined Principal Financial Group as a small market 401(k) wholesaler. A few years later, Principal tapped him for a newly created role, Director of TPA Distribution, to help develop Principal’s national TPA growth strategy.
As a Regional Director for PenChecks, John consults with TPAs on implementing PenChecks’ services to improve their operational efficiency and client experience. His territory includes the Southeast region and parts of the Midwest. John is a licensed Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Plan Fiduciary Advisor, and a member of the National Institute of Pension Administrators and the American Retirement Association.

John has always been drawn to finding ways to help businesses solve problems and improve their operational efficiencies. His business philosophy centers on three pillars: relationships, leadership, and efficiency.
He believes that strong relationships are built on genuine care, reliability, and bringing energy and fresh ideas to every meeting.
With respect to leadership, he values fostering a culture that encourages intelligent risk-taking, independent thinking, and extreme ownership.
He views efficiency as continuously seeking new ways to streamline processes, save time, and reduce mistakes.
Underpinning these pillars is the conviction that well-designed habits, things we have complete control over and can achieve on a daily basis, are crucial to success.
On the Home Front
When John is not out visiting with TPAs, he’s at home in Lexington, KY with his sweetheart Alison and their dog, “the world’s sweetest sheepadoodle.” Forever an Eagle Scout, he enjoys hiking, boating, camping, cycling, and any other reason to be outdoors, especially if he has a landscaping or light carpentry project to knock out. Traveling and exploring new places are also high on his priorities list. When it’s time to relax, he likes reading great books, writing humorous pieces about his observations of the world, and spending time with friends and family, preferably while cooking up a feast on his grill. Originally from Richmond, VA, John has also lived in Atlanta, GA, and Washington, D.C.
